This field trip offers the unique chance to see South African coal mining company Canyon Coal’s flagship greenfield opencast Khanye Colliery located in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng was officially opened in the presence of the Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe, on 2 November 2018.

Khanye has reserves of about 39-million ton with a remaining life-of-mine of 16 years. Opencast mining commenced in December 2017. The mine produces 200 000 t/m of run-of-mine coal, which is then washed and predominantly used for the export market. The newly built 400 t/h Larcodem plant was commissioned in the beginning of 2019. With an average strip ratio of less than 2:1, as well as a fairly uniform geology, coal can be extracted at low cost from the deposit, resulting in an economical operation. The mine’s producing RB2 and RB3 products.
